Since its inception in 1989, Takini High School has been housed in temporary buildings. The temporary facilities included: six single double-wide trailer units; which housed five secondary academic classrooms and the special education administrative offices. The high school administration, the alternative classroom, and the Talented and Gifted Program were located in a tin building which was located adjacent to the portable classrooms. Science, computers, and art were located in the Elementary building.
The spring storms in 2009 caused excessive damage to the trailer units and the tin building. The facilities became unsafe for students and staff to occupy, because high winds had forced snow into the ceiling areas which caused them to collapse. The trailer units were not able to be repaired to enable any occupation. The tin building was repaired to enable some occupation. All of the high schools with the exception of the three classrooms in the elementary building were relocated to the tin building. Talented and Gifted program and the art classes shared a room in the elementary building.
In April of 2009, Takini School began working closely with Dr. Cheri Farlee, ELO, Cheyenne Eagle Butte, and Mr. Dennis Rodrigues, BIA Facilities Management, Alburquerque, New Mexico. As a result, five new double-wide temporary classrooms; which house two separate classrooms and two restroom facilities for boys and girls were brought in from New Mexico and set up in the same location as the previous temporary trailers.
Students and staff moved into these new units in November. The first cold weather, in December, caused water pipes to freeze and break in the new units. Then, the snow and ice storm in January which caused power outages and broken water mains throughout the area caused broken water pipes and frozen sewer lines in the new units. Broken pipes caused flooding in the new units. Takini High School students and staff have now been without bathroom facilities in the classrooms since the middle of January.
The students and staff of Takini High School have been very patient in their wait for a permanent high school facility in which to learn, grow, and prosper.
